India was exposed to commerce education in way back 1886 when it was first introduced to Indian universities. In February 1895, Indian Government established the first School of Commerce in Calicut and since then, studying in commerce has acquired a large chunk of loyalists. Talking of commerce, the first thought that strikes the mind of a person is the fair abstract of buying and selling or trade or even the act of exchanging goods. On the other hand, business can be described as a group set up for the reason of appealing in producing or exchanging goods or services.

Commerce is often known as the division of trade or making agreements with the exchange of goods and services from the manufacturers to the consumers in varied parts of the country. Commerce comprises of trading something with a fixed economic value such as goods, services or information between two companies or individuals. This works as a central mechanism that drives capitalism and various economic systems. Mumbai being the hub to business allied with shipping from India to varied countries across the globe, acts as the epicenter for commercial purposes.

For those who want to take up commerce as their course in study, the department of commerce was established in Mumbai University on 1st December’1980. The department offers useful information for not only 3 year under graduate programme but also for two year course of Master of Commerce (M.Com). Commerce Department also provides admission to students who are seeking for research leading to PhD degrees.
