Delhi University is the foremost university of the country and is reckoned across the globe for the quality education it imparts amongst the students. The high standards of teaching and research offered by the university have attracts students from outside India to study. Delhi University was founded in the year 1922 as a residential unitary university by Central Legislative Assemble Act.
Sir Maurice Gwyer, Vice-Chancellor then realized the importance of a well-qualified faculty that led to a search across the country. This extensive search led to the formation of one of the most distinguished faculty in the country that comprised of Prof. D S Kothari in Physics, Prof. T R Sheshadri in Chemistry, Prof. P Maheshwari in Botany and Prof. M L Bhatia in Zoology. Since then the university has grown into one of the largest universities of the country and today it rests its back on 14 faculties, 86 academic departments and 79 colleges with more than 2,20,000 students.
The University campus at Viceregal Lodge Estate is there since October 1933, when the university office and library were shifted there and till today site is focal centre of the Main Campus. In addition to this central administrative office, examination office and sports complex, the main departments of the Faculty of Science are there in Viceregal Lodge Estate. The colleges under Delhi universities are centers of advanced studies which now are the centers of excellence in education as well as research in the respective areas.
