Formative Assessment in Science For Class IX II Term

Regarding CCE, CBSE board has recently issued a circular in continual of circular no.42 for II term of Class IX. In Class IX Science, there will be two formative tests and a Summative test at the end of year. In Formative assessment, it will include the following;-

* Assessment on Paper-pen test
Due to weightage be given to various types of questions as short answer, long answer, MCQ etc, the questions will include all difficult levels such as Easy, Average, Difficult, HOTS etc.


* Practical Assessment based on the curriculum of CBSE board
Students will have to conduct experiments from all areas of curriculum. The practical assessment will be based on observation, experimental set up, record of observation/data, conclusions drawn by the student, practical record file and Viva.


* Continuous Assessment
The suggested areas of continuous assessment are home assignments / class assignments, class response, seminars, symposium, group discussion and group activity. In home assignments, weightage is given to regularity, presentation, neatness, correctness and class response includes Oral questioning, quiz and worksheets. In seminar, one topic will be divided among 8 to 10 students to research or study and present it later to all the students. Let us take an example, topic 'Improvement in Crop Yields' may be divided into sub topics for the presentation like introduction, crop variety improvement, crop production management and crop protection on management.

Assessment areas
The areas of assessment will be based on public speaking, verbal expression, leadership quality, ability to research on the topic, acquisition of content knowledge. The suggested topics are diseases and their causes, animal husbandry, application of Archimede's principle, sources of energy and overcoming energy crisis, separation of mixtures - the techniques and physical and chemical changes in daily life.

In Symposium, the students have to be present papers on the topics of their interest. The areas of assessment will be depth of the content, use of audio-visual aids, presentation of the content, expression and comprehension of the topic. The suggested topics are:-

* Hygiene to ward off the diseases

* Prevention is better than cure

* Application of ultrasound

* Chemical classification of metals

* 'Pressure' - its application in daily life

* Atomic models


In Group discussion, there will be a group of ten students who discuss on the given topic. Students have to choose their group leader, a moderator and a recorder and their roles will be clarified. The topic will be thrown open for discussion. The group leader ensures all the students participate in the group discussion.
Moderator will ensure that no cross talk and no two students speak together and all students listen to one speaker with patience. A recorder will record the observation of all the students including his or her own. The areas of assessment will be based on knowledge of content, courage to put forth, team work, respect to peer, appropriate body language, listening skills and communication skills. The suggested topics for group discussion are related to curriculum as Global warming and its impact, importance of hygiene, saving of power and water, importance of immunization, laws of chemical combination, application of Colloids, displacement of an object in the absence of any force acting on it.


Group activity may include many things such as projects and action plan. The students will have to do the investigatory or experimental projects. In Investigatory projects, it covers collection of data, observation, analysis & interpretation of data and conclusion and inference. The areas of assessment for projects will be analytical, observational skill, inquisitiveness, thinking skill, computing skills, comprehension & understanding (Viva-voce), drawing conclusions etc. The suggested topics are related to the curriculum. They are factors affecting buoyant force, soil fertility, application of reflection of sound, conversation of resources, spread of diseases caused by mosquito in the locality.


The experimental projects will include making hypothesis, identifying problem, observation, testing or experimenting, conclusion and inference, making a theory and analysis & interpretation. The areas of assessment will be

* Analytical

* Observational skill

* Inquisitiveness

* Thinking skill (logical, rationale)

* Application of knowledge

* Comprehension & understanding (viva-voce)

* Drawing conclusions

* Computing skills

* Experimental Skills



For experimental projects, the suggested topics will be related to the curriculum. The topics are

* Floatation using vegetables

* Density of immiscible liquids

* Vibrating objects produce sound

* Location of apical meristem

* Determination of PH in different sample need in daily life (eg. Soap,lotions, ford substances)

* Separation of substance using paper chromatography


In action plan, students of a class will be divided into 5-6 groups for making an action plan. It includes identifying a problem and making a plan for finding a solution. The students have to identify a problem, interact with people who are associated with the problem, study the causes of the problem, categorize the problem in terms of effect on people, magnitude, impact on community. The plan may include meeting people, listing people/authorities who can help to find solutions, counseling the people,
seeking opportunities with the authorities for discussing the identified problem and seek their help and a follow up action on the solution of the problem. The areas of assessment will be

* Identification of a problem

* Concern for the community

* Team work

* Analysis of the problem

* Strategy planned by the students

* Self confidence

* Speaking skills

* Follow up action to see concern for people/environment


The suggested topics are related to the course as hygiene in and around school, leaking of water pipes, wastage of electricity, control of contagious or infectious diseases, stagnation of water in the coolers, seepage of water in buildings, sale of cigarettes near schools etc.

The last one is survey in which collect information on a relevant topic of study in a group. In this activity, the assessment will be done group wise or student wise. The areas of assessment will be based on conversational skills, public relations, data collection, inquisitiveness and analytical skills. The suggested topics for general awareness will related to science. The topics are prevalence of diseases in a locality or community, consumption or misuse of electricity, garbage collection in the locality and contamination of water of different areas.
