Mumbai University's academic council on Friday cleared the proposal for academic autonomy for KJ Somaiya College of Science and Commerce in Vidyavihar. “Once the proposal is cleared, the college will have the freedom to frame its own syllabus,” said Rajpal Hande, director, Board of College and University Development.

The academic council took a series of other decisions on Friday, including a change in the pattern of the third year Bachelor of Commerce exam, based on the newly introduced credit system. For some subjects, of 60 marks,15 will be allotted for objective-type questions.

The first year BCom pattern has also been changed, with the syllabus now specifying weightage of marks for different sections. Details of the specifics will be put up for students to check on the Mumbai University website within a few days.

The council approved a proposal stating teachers working in colleges or departments of Mumbai University for a minimum of five years need not appear for the newly introduced PhD Entrance Test (PET). It was also decided that reserved category students shall be given a 5% relaxation for clearing PET.
